Post-Surgery Shogun Wants the Belt

UFC.com is reporting that Mauricio "Shogun" Rua, just two weeks after losing to Forrest Griffin at UFC 76, is recovering from successful knee surgery to his left ACL.

Shogun's standing in the 205-lb. food chain seems to have dropped with the loss, but the Chute Boxe star still has his eyes on the UFC light heavyweight belt. In fact, post-surgery Shogun has been quoted as saying exactly what you think a fighter in his position might say: he makes no excuses for the loss, he thanks his fans, and he'll come back better than ever.

"There are some tough guys in this division, a lot of people running for the belt. But see how life is funny, the actual UFC Champion, Quinton Jackson, I beat him in the first round of the PRIDE Grand Prix two years ago, he lost twice to Wanderlei (Silva) and he got the UFC belt from Chuck (Liddell) in less than two minutes. As I told you, it is very difficult to make any kind of prediction about these fights. I know that on my way to the belt I will face Forrest, then maybe Quinton or (Dan) Henderson, and I’m ready to go. I respect them all, they are professionals like me and it’s time to prove that I can be the number one in this division."

Shogun Wanted Tito

The following quote from light heavyweight superstar Mauricio “Shogun” Rua has been translated from Brazilian MMA magazine TATAME:

"Usually, I do not choose an opponent, I am professional fighter and I fought against anyone when Pride use to choose and I do not have anger for any fighter. I know that it is a very brave choice to step into a ring and respect all the fighters, but if I could choose, I would choose Tito Ortiz. He said a bunch of crap about my country and me, and he said he would never, ever, lose a fight against a fighter from a third world country… Come on man, I find it so disrespectful! He’s also said that he wants to face me. When I met Dana White to sign the contract, he asked me who I wanted to fight, and immediately said that I wanted Ortiz, but Dana said that it couldn't happen, because he fought recently. I don’t have anything personal against Ortiz, but all those things that he said, motivated me to fight against him."

Wow.

Knocking on the Door

For the time being, we all know who will be challenging for UFC championship honors: Randy Couture will defend his heavyweight strap against Gabriel Gonzaga next month, light heavyweight champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson is set to face Pride champ Dan Henderson in a unification bout at UFC 75, lightweight champ Sean Sherk will defend his belt against BJ Penn (most likely) at UFC 78, Matt Hughes hopes to regain the welterweight belt against Matt Serra at UFC 79, and Anderson Silva and Rich Franklin will fight once again for middleweight honors at UFC 77.

Beyond that, however, the top contenders are not as clearly established. Kodiak MMA has therefore put together a quick list of fighters who could - and should - be just one or two more wins away from a title match.

Karo "The Heat" Parisyan
The glamorous UFC welterweight division is loaded with young and veteran talent, and a case can be made that a number of 170-pounders deserve a title shot. None, however, are more deserving at the moment than Karo. Granted, Karo will have to wait in line for things to unfold within the division. The winner of the GSP/Josh Koscheck fight at UFC 74 will face the winning Matt (Serra vs. Hughes) for the title, and after that, it should be Karo’s turn.

Karo is 8-2 in the UFC with impressive UFC wins against Josh Burkman, Drew Fickett, Chris Lytle, Nick Thompson, Shonie Carter, Nick Diaz, and welterweight champ Matt Serra. His only UFC losses have come to former champion Georges St. Pierre, and to Diego Sanchez in what was arguably the best fight of 2006.

Karo has shown a propensity to slug it out with any and all challengers, and he continues to thrill MMA fans with his peerless Judo prowess.

Jon Fitch
Fitch carries a sparkling 6-0 resume and has earned stoppage wins over tough competition: Josh Burkman, Luigi Fioravanti, Thiago Alves, Roan Carniero, and WEC top welterweight contender Brock Larson.

For me, Fitch is in the same boat as Karo Parisyan, which is why I’d much prefer that Fitch fight Karo – not Diego Sanchez – at UFC 76 in September. Nonetheless, with a win over Sanchez at UFC 76, it’ll be hard for the UFC to keep the Indiana native out of the championship spotlight.

Joe “Daddy” Stevenson
If you haven’t figured it out by now, Joe “Daddy” is a favorite here at Kodiak MMA, even though he beat beloved Long Island product Luke “The Silent Assassin” Cummo.

Stevenson, the Ultimate Fighter Season One winner, sports a very solid 27-7 MMA record and has known defeat just once in the UFC octagon. With a win against Kurt Pellegrino next month, Joe Daddy should be next in line for a lightweight title shot against BJ Penn or Sean Sherk. Like Sherk, Stevenson is an exceptionally powerful grappler who smothers his opponents and eventually proves to be too much man.

Since dropping down to 155 lbs., Stevenson has looked more impressive than ever. He choked the shit out of Dokonjonosuke Mishima in the opening round at and then did the same to the very powerful, very annoying Melvin Guillard.

Kenny Florian
Florian battled – and battered – UFC lightweight champ Sean Sherk for the vacant 155-lb. belt, and showed a remarkably improved Muy Thai arsenal in defeat. He has since continued to fight well as a welterweight, submitting Dokonjonosuke Mishima in April and absolutely destroying Ring of Fire lightweight champion Alvin Robinson at UFC 73 with strikes in the very first round. Florian, a Boston College graduate, has demonstrated a knack for finishing fights and seems to be only getting better.

Mauricio “Shogun” Rua
If you’ve never seen Shogun fight, you’re missing out. Actually, if you've never seen a Shogun fight, stop reading this post right now and go find some online video of him somewhere.

The Chute Boxe product is widely regarded as the top 205-lb. fighter alive, and he brings a ferocious style of Muay Thai kickboxing that the UFC light heavyweight division has never seen. With Rua’s already expansive fan base and dominant wins over Ricardo Arona, Alistair Overeem (twice), Kevin Randleman, Antonio Rogiero Nogueira, and UFC LHW champ Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, don’t be surprised to see him in the championship mix within the next few months if he makes it past Forrest Griffin.

Then again, if UFC brass plans to pave an easy road for Chuck Liddell to get back to championship contention, our boy Shogun is definitely not someone against whom The Iceman would be pitted along the way.

Andrei “The Pitbull” Arlovski
I know, I know. He scored a questionable win over Marcio Cruz at UFC 66 and then bored the balls off of us against Fabricio Werdum at UFC 70. The fact remains that Arlovski is one of the division’s most explosive, athletically gifted fighters, and his only UFC losses have come to fighters who have at some point worn UFC heavyweight championship gold.

Plus, notable names like Cro Cop, Tim Sylvia, “Minotauro” Nogueira, and Brandon Vera are either coming off of losses or need to rack up a few more wins before fighting for the belt. In addition, the pressure is on Pitbull to perform, whose title shot against the Couture-Gonzaga winner was rescinded by UFC president Dana White after his (Arlovski’s) lackluster match with Werdum.

Arlovski has the tools to beat just about any heavyweight anywhere, and with one more win, his name should once again be atop the list of title contenders.

Kendall “Da Spyder” Grove
The Hawaiian-born middleweight and Team Punishment fighter has been impressive since winning the Ultimate Fighter Season Three reality show, earning submission wins over Chris Price (strikes) and Alan Belcher (choke).

The 6’6” Grove is a true mixed martial artist, combining dangerous submission skills with a dangerous arsenal of strikes. He might not be a household name, but Kendall Grove’s talent and popularity, as well as the relatively shallow talent pool at 185 lbs., make him a likely title contender in the near future.

Shogun vs. Forrest at UFC 76?

The following is a translated message from Brazilian mixed martial arts mag TATAME:

"Master Rudimar Fedrigo confirmed to us first-hand that Mauricio Shogun will fight the American Forrest Griffin at UFC 76, which will happen on 22th September in USA."

Rudimar, the founder of the famed Chute Boxe camp, reportedly sad that he and Rua "went specially to Las Vegas to sign the 4-fight contract and record that pre-fight video that shows before the fight."

The news was also reported this morning on Tagg Radio.

The UFC, however, has not yet confirmed the bout, and until they do, I'll hold off on any "Run, Forrest, run!!!" references.

Morning Droppings

- UFC president Dana White has officially confirmed in an ESPN interview that Mauricio “Shogun” Rua will debut at UFC 76 against undefeated Lyoto Machida.

- Fresh off a January drug suspension, American Top Team’s Thiago Alves will reportedly make his octagon return at UFC Fight Night 11 in September against Japanese MMA veteran Kuniyoshi Hironaka.

- Jorge Gurgel suffered a broken jaw and a facial fracture in the second round of his UFC 73 fight with Diego Saraiva and has been suspended indefinitely by the California State Athletic Commission. So much for the "Bionic Brazilian" moniker.

- UFC vet Joe “Diesel” Riggs has been reportedly been told by the UFC that if he loses his July 21 Hardcore Fighting Championship match against Dan Chambers, he will no longer have the opportunity to fight under the Zuffa-owned UFC or WEC banners.

Dana White Talks UFC Light-Heavies

There's been a lot going down recently with the UFC LHW division, so here's some of the latest 205-lb. news from UFC president Dana White.

- Dan Henderson will fight Quinton "Rampage" Jackson at UFC 75 in what will be a unification bout for the UFC and Pride belts. This is excellent news.

It was reported a while back that this fight would be non-title, and then it was supposedly for the UFC belt only, which seemed stupid, so I'm glad to see champion vs. champion for all the marmalade. Fittingly, UFC 75 has been officially titled "Champion vs. Champion."

And as I wrote earlier, even if Henderson loses his LHW belt to Jackson, he's still got the Pride middleweight strap. Henderson vs. Silva, to me at least, is infinitely more exciting than Silva-Franklin. But let's not get ahead of ourselves just yet...

- White says that former UFC light heavyweight champion Chuck "The Iceman" Liddell will "probably" make his return to the Octagon in September. No opponent has been cited. Wanderleisilvawayswhat...

- According to a Gainesville Sun article, White is claiming that Mauricio “Shogun” Rua is likely to make his UFC debut against Ryoto Machida at UFC 76. MMAWeekly reports that both Rua and Machida were scheduled to fight at UFC 76 against the dreaded TBA, so this match-up gives them each an opponent in one another. This could be an excellent showcase of Machida's polished mixed martial artistry and against Rua's furiously technical Chute Box style in a match-up between the Chute Boxe vs. Black House camps.

This fight excites me because 1) it's Shogun we're talking about here, folks, and 2) Machida is an excellent fighter who, in my opinion, has been largely overlooked by most MMA fans, partly because none of his UFC fights have been televised. The man is undefeated and holds wins over Rich Franklin and BJ Penn. Shogun, meanwhile, is widely regarded by many as the best 205-pounder on the planet, especially now that Wanderlei Silva and Chuck Liddell have both lost their belts.

"I injured my knee training. I went to the doctor, but it was not a big deal, and he said that I can train normally."

- Mauricio "Shogun" Rua clears up rumors about his injury.

Morning Droppings

- It looks as if a knee injury will keep the newly-signed Mauricio “Shogun” Rua off the UFC 76 in September. According to GracieFighter.com, the extent of the injury should known in the next few days.

- Will Forrest Griffin be the next obstacle for explosive UFC newcomer Houston Alexander? A Midwestfighter.com article reports that Alexander appeared at an OFC event, said that his next UFC fight will be in August or September, and hinted that Griffin could be the opponent. Alexander said nothing definite about his next opponent, but this is a fight I’d like to see, so I’m running with it.

- The good news is that he didn’t test positive for marijuana again. The bad news is that it was coke this time. Former K-1 USA Grand Prix champion Carter Williams tested positive for cocaine after being stopped by Paul Buentello after last weekend’s Strikeforce-EliteXC card. The CSAC has fined Williams $1,000 and suspended him through Dec. 19, 2007.

“My goal is to get this title, because it doesn't belong to Wanderlei anymore. I hope to get this chance, because I'm fighting at this weight class for a long time, and, thank God, I'm beating everybody. I think my title shot time has come.”

Morning Droppings

- 2005 Pride Grand Prix Tournament winner Mauricio "Shogun" Rua will make his UFC debut at UFC 76 in September against the always dangerous TBA. UFC prez Dana White considers Rua an immediate contender for the light-heavyweight belt, which he should. Rua is widely regarded as the best 205-pounder in all of MMA.

- The UFC has confirmed that Michael Bisping will indeed be facing Matt Hamill at UFC 75 in London. Enough of this Ken Shamrock hullaballoo...

- Word on the street is that middleweights Joe Doerksen and Paulo Filho will be fighting on August 5 in Las Vegas as part of the WEC 29 card, which will be broadcast live on Versus Network at 9 p.m. ET.

- Charles "Krazy Horse" Bennett was actually released from a Florida jail yesterday morning, and a flight was booked for him to arrive in San Jose in time to weigh in for his scheduled EliteXC fight against Vincent "Joe Boxer" Valenzuela tonight. Unfortunately, Krazy Horse hit traffic on the way to the airport and missed his flight.

- BJ Penn has invited UFC lightweight Joe Lauzon to move to Hawaii and train with BJ and company. BJ even offered his star TUF 5 pupil a spot in a fighters' house for a year or two, and Lauzon is looking into IT jobs in Hawaii. After all, a man's got to pay his bills.
