Vera Set to Return to UFC in 2007

Yesterday, UFC heavyweight – and aspiring lightweight – Brandon “The Truth” Vera shared with The Fight Network his plans to return to the UFC octagon and fight twice in 2007.

That’s great news, but the year’s more than half over, so he better get to it. Either way, I’m very excited for Vera to get the gloves back on, and so is faithful KodiakMMA reader “Jersey” John Vieira.

The Truth explained yesterday that he was offered a heavyweight title fight at UFC 68 against Tim Sylvia, but managerial disputes – he’s in the process od severing ties with that manager – kept him from taking the fight. Instead, Randy Couture filled in for him against Sylvia, and we all know how that worked out.

The current heavyweight division is a different beast than the one Vera knew just a few months ago, and for a while, I worried that he may have missed the boat to championship gold during his absence, especially with Randy Couture's rebirth and the signings of Pride heavies Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Heath Herring, Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic, and Fabricio Werdum.

It was good to hear news this from Vera, but his road to the top of the UFC heavyweight mountain will be much tougher this time around.

Nonetheless, Vera seems undeterred and has expressed a desire to take on all comers, heavyweight or light heavyweight. He told RealFighter magazine a few months back that he's ready for Fedor Emelianenko, Chuck Liddell, Tito Ortiz, and Rampage Jackson. Wow.

Vera is supremely athletic, he has probably the second most complete fight game of all UFC heavyweights (Big Nog takes top honors), and he's garnered a devoted fan base after just three UFC fights. I expect big things.

Brandon Vera has a real good shot at holding HW and LHW belts simultaneously, and I think that he can beat everyone at LHW, including Shogun and Wanderlei. He has the talent and all-around skill to do it. War Vera!!!
